The Rolex Mentor Protégé Arts Initiative has been making a contribution in the field of arts for over three decades. Though the Rolex Mentor Protégé Arts Initiative was launched in 2002, Rolex’s rendezvous with the arts began in the 1970s with its esteemed relationship with New Zealand’s soprano Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. The relationship has only grown stronger over the years and has attracted the attention of some of the most respected artists of our times. The Rolex Mentor Protégé Arts Initiative has played a vital role in enriching culture the world over. The contribution made by the mentors is indispensable not only for the protégés but also for the world of arts. The roots of the noble philosophy behind the initiative can be traced throughout history with references to the great thinkers of Greece, the Gurus of Hindu mythology and the apprentices of the Italian Renaissance.
Rolex has an advisory board that comprises of some of the most distinguished practitioners and artists of our era to help suggest potential mentors. Some of the leading contributors to the world of arts headed by Rolex’s chief executive choose the honorary mentors for an enriching and enlightening year of mentorship. The advisory board consists of names like Pierre Audi who is a well known performing arts director; the visual arts duo of Christo and Jeanne-Claude; choreographer William Forsythe; the multi-talented radio broadcaster, author and music producer Charlie Gillett, the respected visual artist from the U.K. Anish Kapoor; philanthropist and producer Reynold Levy; the talented Julie Taymor who is a theatre, film and opera director. The long list of members to the advisory board also includes actress Fiona Shaw, museum director and curator Sir Nicholas Serota, visual artist Giuseppe Penone, cultural producer, music Eve Ruggieri, theatre and opera director Peter Sellars, celebrated author Wole Soyinka, film-maker Mira Nair, soprano Jessye Norman as well as collector and philanthropist Agnes Gund.

With an assortment of the most respected names in the field of arts, the Rolex Mentor Protégé Arts Initiative has been successful in assisting and nurturing some of the most extraordinary rising talent of today to achieve their full potential. Just as much thought is put into choosing the mentors an equal amount of effort is put into choosing the protégés. The protégés and mentors are brought together from all corners of the world to take forth the legacy and tradition of all realms of art. The initiative brings together mentors and protégés from all genres of art including dance, literature, film, music, visual arts and theatre. The mentors are the first to be selected by the advisory board that is renewed every two years. Once the mentors are finalized, the process goes on to the next level of ascertaining the profile of the protégé they would wish to work with. The protégés are searched for by an anonymous expert panel, who are later narrowed down to three finalists. The protégés receive a grant of US$ 25,000 for the year of mentoring and receive a further budget of $25,000 after the year in order to create a new piece of work, publication or performance. The mentors too receive an honorarium of $50,000 for their year of artistic insights and nurturing.
